Los Lobos formed in 1973 while attending Garfield High School together in East Los Angeles. In 1976, the band recorded a rather unconventional debut album called
Si Se Puede!
in which all proceeds went to the United Farm Workers of America. While holding down regular jobs, the band came out with the studio album
Los Lobos del Este de Los Angeles
two years later. The album received a positive reception from critics and fans alike and established the band's distinctive sound. In 1983, the song Anselma from the extended play album
…And a Time to Dance
received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Mexican-American performance. After signing with Warner Brothers, Los Lobos released
How Will the Wolf Survive?
in 1984, which brought the band to new heights of popularity. Turning its sights toward Hollywood, the band recorded part of the soundtrack to the 1987 film
La Bamba
about the life of rock star Ritchie Valens. The soundtrack was nominated by the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group. The album
By the Light of the Moon
, released the same year, was also nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group. Los Lobos finally won a Grammy Award a year later for Best Mexican-American Performance with the album
La Pistola y el Corazon
. The band notched up another win with the 1992 Best Pop Instrumental Performance award for the song Mariachi Suite. Los Lobos has received 11 Grammy nominations in total. The band is a member of the
