Start your engines! AMA Supercross brings fans a night of excitement, power and intensity that leaves them on the edge of their seats. Supercross as a sport was formed as an indoor variation to motocross in the early 1970s. The first AMA Supercross Championship took place in 1974 with Pierre Karsmakers winning the title. Featuring three classes—a 450cc class, 250cc East class and a 250cc West Class—AMA Supercross events are comprised of two heat laps consisting of 20 rides and a consolation race in each class consisting of 22-23 riders. The track consists of a series of whoop sections, rhythm sections and triple jumps with banked berms. Mud and sand, hard and soft dirt and flat and bumpy surfaces are all utilized to create a challenging course. Venues where AMA Supercross races have previously been held include locations like
the Dome at America's Center
in St. Louis,
AT&T Stadium
in Arlington,
Oakland Coliseum
in Oakland and
Petco Park
in San Diego, to name a few. Purchase your AMA Supercross tickets at StubHub.
While there are many outstanding AMA Supercross participants, a few stand out based on their sheer talent, dedication and number of championship wins. Jeremy McGrath has won the most AMA Supercross championships, coming in at seven total AMA Supercross Championship wins. Ricky Carmichael sits in second place with five AMA Supercross Championship titles.
The 2020 AMA Supercross schedule kicked off on January 4, 2020, in Anaheim, California. With four additional venues from the 2019 schedule, AMA Supercross will have events at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, Mo.,
Raymond James Stadium
in Tampa, Fla.,
Gillette Stadium
in Foxborough, Mass., and Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. The 2020 schedule will conclude on May 2nd in Salt Lake City.
Many of the locations that serve as venues to the 2020 AMA Supercross races also serve as athletic event centers. The stadiums are often large, with one of the largest being
Rice-Eccles Stadium
, which holds over 45,000 spectators.
Over the years, AMA Supercross classes have evolved and diversified, along with the technical specifications for premier and support classes. Since 2011, the premier class is noted as the 450SX class and the support class is known as the 250SX class. Prior to 2011, starting in 2006, the premier class was referred to as the Supercross (SX) class and the support class was referred to as the Supercross Lites (SX Lites). Prior to 2006, the premier class was simply known as the 250cc class and the support class was called the 125cc class. Support classes are then further divided into East and West divisions for regional championship competitions.
At AMA Supercross races, venues are turned into dirt tracks that feature steep jumps and obstacles. Natural terrain is brought in, and the course is developed to provide easy views for spectators. The main events will last 15-20 minutes, but riders begin heat laps long before the rider introductions are made.
