Ira Glass has spent nearly his entire life immersed in the world of public radio. In 1978, he began working in as an intern at the Washington, D.C., NPR headquarters during his summer break from college. . In 1989, he decamped for Chicago Public Radio where he won plaudits for his in-depth reporting of Chicago school reform and as a co-host of

. It quickly earned a following for its focus on peculiar stories of everyday life and as a platform for unique guest performers such as David Sedaris. The show has a weekly audience of more than 2 million listeners. Each weekly episode is released as a free podcast with an additional 2.5 million listeners. For its excellence in radio journalism,
